Call to Worship                                                                                                       AJ Baratta

Leader:     We gather this morning to prepare ourselves for the outside world;

People:    not to hide ourselves from it.

Leader:     We learn, we encourage and we strengthen each other,

People:    in order to throw back the doors and face life’s challenges.

       Leader:     If your right arm is causing you to sin, cut it off.  If your ship becomes a

hiding place, burn it down.  God has so much more in store for us!

ALL:        Let us worship God!

*Hymn                                   “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)”                                Hillsong

*Prayer of Confession (Unison)

       Dear Lord, we put on brave faces as we denounce sin behind the closed doors of the church.  We use the sanctuary to feel safe from the struggles and evil that lay in wait for us to drop our guard.  Remind us that You led us here, You steered the ship that brought us to this place.  Encourage us as You continue to map out our lives.  Enable us to be strong, confident and able to lead others by the light of Your fire burning around us…(Silent time of prayer)

*Assurance of Pardon

Leader:     Jesus knows that we need safety and comfort, but He calls us to be bold and courageous.  He takes our fear and our hesitancy and gives us strength, mercy and forgiveness.

ALL:           Thanks be to God!

*The Gloria Patri – Hymn Tune, 581

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

Message                 “Abandon Ship!”           Dr. Jonathan Sloan

Genesis 8:13-22  Matthew 28:16-20                   Pew Bible pgs. 6 & 812

Genesis 8:13-22 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
13 In the six hundred first year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and saw that the face of the ground was drying. 14 In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. 15 Then God said to Noah, 16 “Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh—birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth—so that they may abound on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18 So Noah went out with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives. 19 And every animal, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out of the ark by families.

God’s Promise to Noah
20 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And when the Lord smelled the pleasing odor, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of humankind, for the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth; nor will I ever again destroy every living creature as I have done.

22 As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest, cold and heat,
summer and winter, day and night,
shall not cease.”

Matthew 28:16-20 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
The Commissioning of the Disciples
16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
