Abiding Together

Dr. Jennifer Blake gives a message about the Personality of the Holy Spirit and how each of us has access to more than just a force, that the Holy Spirit is a Person, our Friend, Helper and Comforter, and so much more . Based on John 14:14-31

*The Greeting and Welcoming of One Another

(There are no strangers in God’s House, just friends we have not yet met.

Greet your neighbor in Christian love and let them know that you’re glad to see them!)

*Call to Worship (Responsive)                                                                                     AJ Baratta

Leader:            We gather together as believers, one with God;

People:           and filled with the Holy Spirit.

Leader:            The God who created us never leaves us,

People:           as we are surrounded and consumed by the Spirit abiding in us.

Leader:            God sent Jesus to live among us to open our hearts, then poured the Spirit

into our lives.

All:                  Let us worship God!

*Hymn                                               “Come Holy Spirit”

“Breathe”

*Prayer of Confession (Unison)                                                                                            Kathy Stockham

Dear Lord, at times we feel unloved and treat others poorly in response, help us to feel the Holy Spirit, a  constant reminder to us of Your unending love.  When we have doubts and fears, and struggle to stand with You, help us to see the Spirit as our Helper.

In times when we feel alone and the world is against us, remind us that the Spirit is our Advocate.  When we are confused and stray from You, be with us as we seek the Spirit as our Counselor.  As hard times surround us and we feel that our prayers are falling on deaf ears, help us to turn to the Spirit as our Intercessor.  Continue to be our hope as we seek You, as the Spirit abides deep within our hearts and souls…

(Silent time of prayer)

*Assurance of Pardon

Leader:            God sent Jesus to live with us, to teach us, to die for us and to grant us mercy.  God forgives us and loves us so deeply we have been given a constant reminder of this unending, ongoing relationship with our Creator…the Holy Spirit living inside us.

All:                  Thanks be to God!

* The Gloria Patri – Hymn Tune, 581

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

Message             “Abiding Together”

Dr. Jennifer Blake

John 14:14-31                                        Pew Bible pg. 877

14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

The Promise of the Holy Spirit
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.

18 “I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me.

25 “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me; 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us be on our way.

WE SEAL AND RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

*Hymn #282                              “Come Down, O Love Divine”

*Brief Statement of Faith (Unison)                                                                 Excerpt 10.4-10.6

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life.

The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church.

The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of Baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church.

In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all people to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.

In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

The Prayer of Thanksgiving (Unison)

Eternal God, thank you for coming to us in Jesus Christ. Renew in us faith and hope that we may welcome Christ to rule our thoughts and claim our love, as Lord of lords and King of kings through Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
