(Hymn #137)  He came down that we may have peace; he came down that we may have peace; he came down that we may have peace; hallelujah forevermore.

*Prayer of Confession (Unison)

Dear Lord, we are told to be aware of the needs of others, yet we too often are focused on our own desires.  We claim to love others, but our fears and prejudices keep the love from getting past the surface.  We welcome people into our lives and homes, but complain about the work involved.  Help us to see past ourselves to serve and pray for others.  Open our hearts so that we may love deeply and fully.  Guide our thoughts so that every word we speak comes from You.  Remind us of the strength, the promises and the gifts you give us so that we may serve and support others in Your holy name…(Silent time of prayer)

*Assurance of Pardon

Leader:            Jesus came as a servant, a perfect teacher of perfect love.  He died a Savior, an example of strength and mercy.

All:                  Thanks be to God!

* The Gloria Patri – Hymn Tune, 581

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

Message                                     “Growing in Faith: Service”                                Dr. Jonathan Sloan

1 Peter 4:7-11

7 The end of all things is near; therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Be hospitable to one another without complaining. 10 Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. 11 Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

WE SEAL AND RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

*The Apostles’ Creed

            I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

            And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

            I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen

The Prayer of Thanksgiving (Unison)

       Eternal God, thank you for coming to us in Jesus Christ. Renew in us faith and hope that we may welcome Christ to rule our thoughts and claim our love, as Lord of lords and King of kings through Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
