Redefining Lostness

Dr. Jennifer Blake gives a sermon about the extents of God’s love in seeking to find us, and once found how we often lose the way but take similar efforts to find it again. Based on Luke 15:1-10

*Call to Worship (Responsive)

Leader:            Some come this morning feeling lost,

People:           but in the Lord’s presence we are found!

Leader:            We leave our wandering ways and seek the security of the Lord’s hands;

People:           He rejoices as He gathers us together.

Leader:            Do not be afraid!  Even in a lost world, we praise the God who continually

seeks us and brings us to Himself.

All:                  Let us worship God!

*Prayer of Confession (Unison)

Dear Lord, sometimes we feel like we are just one more person, unimportant and easily forgotten; so we follow the crowd and find ourselves separated from You.  We wonder if You truly love us, or if we are a disappointment; so we continue to act in ways contrary to Your teaching.  Help us to believe that we are special in Your eyes, that You know every hair on our heads and that You not only continually lead us, but You also pursue us and rejoice when we find our way back to You…(Silent time of prayer)

*Assurance of Pardon

Leader:            We try to follow Jesus but lose our way.  He finds us and we lose our despair.  He stays with us and we lose our loneliness.  He forgives us the sin that separates us from Him and we gain eternity.

All:                  Thanks be to God!

*The Gloria

Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to God the Son,

Glory be to God the Spirit, All glory to the One.

Message                                         “Redefining Lostness”                                        Dr. Jennifer Blake

Luke 15:1-10

The Parable of the Lost Sheep
1 Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. 2 And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

3 So he told them this parable: 4 “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? 5 When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ 7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

The Parable of the Lost Coin
8 “Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ 10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

*The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen

The Prayer of Thanksgiving (Unison)

Eternal God, thank you for coming to us in Jesus Christ. Renew in us faith and hope that we may welcome Christ to rule our thoughts and claim our love, as Lord of lords and King of kings through Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
