Call to Worship

Leader:     We gather this morning as followers of God with foolish inclinations;

People:    as we look for ways to store our treasures here on earth.

Leader:     We gather this morning as people who seek to be wise;

People:    we turn to God for guidance to live more for others and less for

                        ourselves.

       Leader:     Those who prefer to give themselves credit for their blessings are called

foolish by God; but God continues to heap gifts upon those who are

thankful and in turn bless others.

ALL:        Let us worship God!

*Hymn                                       “This Is Amazing Grace”                                      Bethel Live

*Prayer of Confession (Unison)

       Dear Lord, we all wish to be wise and make wise investments for the future, but often forget to be thoughtful in the present. We take credit for all the good times, but often blame You when times are lean.  We hang on so tightly to things that bring us temporary pleasure that we often cause damage.  Help us to see that planning ahead is necessary, but we need to do so with compassion and wisdom.  Remind us that all comes from You and we need to use our favors as You desire.  Create in us a heart that seeks ways to release our grip on the things of this world that hold us back from helping others.  Teach us to be wise servants of Your way instead of foolish people who get in Your way.…(Silent time of prayer)

*Assurance of Pardon

Leader:     God commands us to release earthly treasures: to help others; to seek selfless lives; and to open ourselves to the forgiveness and grace given to us by Jesus!

ALL:           Thanks be to God!

*The Gloria Patri – Hymn Tune, 581

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

Message       “The Rich Fool’s Way”       Dr. Jonathan Sloan

Luke 12: 13-21, Proverbs  11:18             Pew Bible pg.847 & 518

Luke 12: 13-21

The Parable of the Rich Fool
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” 16 Then he told them a parable: “The land of a rich man produced abundantly. 17 And he thought to himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?’ 18 Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ 20 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”

Proverbs 11:18 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

18 The wicked earn no real gain,
but those who sow righteousness get a true reward
