Where Do You Stand?

Dr. Jonathan Sloan gives a sermon about how the reformation changed the Christian faith and what it means to be a member of the reformed Church. We have great freedom based on Luther’s firm stance. In the end, it comes down to where you stand and what you stand for, not just on Sunday, but every day. How will you use your freedom? Based on Ephesians 2:1-10.

*Call to Worship
We come today as sinners;
people who walk in ways contrary to God’s way.
We will leave today cleansed;
people forgiven by the grace of God.
Before Jesus, people walked in sin with no clear escape from it. They were ruled by sin and destined to be destroyed by it. God’s love and Jesus’ grace saved them and continue to save us.
Let us worship God!

*Prayer of Confession
Dear Lord, we are sinful beings, with sinful natures, surrounded by sinful desires. We falter, we fall and we fail; but you continue to lead us, to teach us and to support us. We lie, we cheat, and we steal, but You point us to the truth, give us clear rules and bless us by supplying our every need. Once we were standing amid sin, but because of Your sacrifice we now stand in righteousness. Help us to embrace Your gift of eternal life…

*Assurance of Pardon
Jesus lived for us and He died for us. He grants us grace, mercy and forgiveness simply for faithfully believing that He loves us enough to do so
Thanks be to God!

Ephesians 2:1-10 (NRSV)

From Death to Life
You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—not the result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.
