Where Do You Stand?

Dr. Jonathan Sloan gives a sermon about how the reformation changed the Christian faith and what it means to be a member of the reformed Church. We have great freedom based on Luther’s firm stance. In the end, it comes down to where you stand and what you stand for, not just on Sunday, but every day. How will you use your freedom? Based on Ephesians 2:1-10.

Reformation #6: To the Glory of God Alone

Prayer of Confession
Dear God, we begin each day determined to live as You command; but we fall short. We allow petty annoyances, deeply rooted prejudices, and displaced anger to dictate our words and actions. Our path once paved with good intentions quickly became a series of bumps and potholes, then when we temporarily got back to smooth surfaces we look to ourselves with boastful pride instead of looking to You with praise and thanksgiving. Help us to live in a way that truly reflects You, Your love, Your grace, and Your glory. Help us to be a true reflection of You no matter what our road conditions may be.

Dr. Jennifer Blake gives the final sermon in our series about the reformation. The sixth in the series, To the Glory of God Alone (Soli Deo Gloria), is based on 1 Peter 4:8-11.

Reformation: In Christ Alone

Prayer of Confession
Dear God, here, among other believers, we are so quick to call out to You, to offer thanksgiving, to credit You as the One who bestows all blessings. We, however, are eerily silent in the world, when uncertain of the beliefs of those around us. We ask for help in many circumstances, but often underestimate the extent of Your influence and overestimate our own. Help us to remember that in life and in death, You alone are the source of all that is good, all that is worthy and all that is necessary to ensure our salvation…

Dr. Jonathan Sloan continues the sermon series about the reformation. The fifth in the series, In Christ Alone (Solus Christus), is based on Acts 4:1-12.

The Reformation: The Priesthood of All Believers

Prayer of Confession
Almighty God, You have set us apart and filled us with the flame of the Holy Spirit; but we continue to try to blend in with the world and extinguish the fire. You tell us to remove hatred, pride, and all our failings as if they are dirty clothes; but we refuse let them go. Instead we layer them until we are too bound in sin to move and too weighed down with guilt and shame to follow You. Help us to use our words, actions and thoughts to reflect You. Help us to proudly wear the garb of the holy priesthood and continue to to let the Holy Spirit burn brightly in us and around us lighting the way so others may follow us to You…

Dr. Jonathan Sloan continues the sermon series about the reformation. The fourth in the series, The Priesthood of All Believers, is based on Acts 2:1-12 and 1 Peter 2:1-10.

Reformation: Grace Alone

Prayer of Confession
Dear God, we know You want us to be good, to serve You and others, to be Christ-like in all we do. We seek ways to please You; we hope that we can somehow repay the blessings You have granted us; we run ourselves ragged trying to prove our worth to You, to prove we are “good enough.” Help us to see that Your grace is not given with conditions. Grace is not poured only onto those who perform great works. We receive grace merely because we belong to You…

Dr. Jonathan Sloan continues the sermon series about the reformation. The third in the series, Grace Alone (Sola Gratia), is based on Romans 1:1-6.

Reformation: Scripture Alone

Prayer of Confession
Dear God, You tell us that Your Word is a sword, a weapon we use against those who wish us eternal harm. We are called to use the Word to combat fear and doubt; to fight evil and darkness; to offer hope and love, yet too many of us don’t use this sword. We keep it polished and on display, or sheathed, as a decorative accessory. Help us engage Your Word as You wish, to take it off the shelf, off our belts and wield it when necessary, whether it is to fight wickedness, clear our path from overgrowth or to protect others…

Dr. Jonathan Sloan continues the sermon series about the reformation. The second in the series, Scripture Alone (Sola Scriptura) is based on 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17.

Reformation: Faith Alone

Prayer of Confession
Dear God, we wake every morning determined to make it through the day without sinning; but we don’t get very far. Whether we sin by action, inaction, or in our thoughts, we are all guilty. We use this guilt to work harder, to help more people, to try to become ‘holier’ people. In accomplishing more, we hope to feel better about ourselves, to make You love us more and to appear more Christian than our neighbors. Help us to remember that You value us because we believe in You and we are saved not because of what we do, but because of who You are…

Dr. Jonathan Sloan starts a sermon series about the reformation. The first in the series, Faith Alone (Sola Fide) is based on Romans 3:20-28.
